Chapter 96: Closure Part 2

Released:

The sudden social assassination attempt by Yuna.

How should I deal with this?

Even if I deny it, she wonโ€™t believe me, and just staying silent isnโ€™t going to work either.

Either way, I could already see her going around blabbing, saying she was โ€œjust asking others for their opinion.โ€

โ€œYuna.โ€

โ€œMhmm!โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s keep this between us, okay?โ€

โ€œShould we?โ€

That was the better option.

Just admit it and shut her mouth.

Yuna was at least trustworthy, so if I asked her to keep it a secret, she would.

โ€œBut Yuna.โ€

โ€œMhmm?โ€

โ€œIโ€™m heading to the shower. How long are you planning to follow me?โ€

โ€œHow long should I follow you?โ€

โ€œWould you mind stopping here?โ€

โ€œHmm, should I?โ€

Should you? How about just donโ€™t follow me at all?

This bratโ€™s really starting to cross the line just because Iโ€™ve been letting her get away with things.

โ€œWell then, letโ€™s call it a day for that.โ€

Yuna smirked slyly, waved her hand, and walked away.

At this rate, I wouldnโ€™t be surprised if she picked my lock and came into my room someday.

***

After a quick shower, I headed to the dining hall and found everyone gathered and waiting except for Lobelia.

Mother, in particular, seemed to have taken a liking to Ariel and was chatting warmly with her, arm in arm.

Well, it was a household with only two sons.

Maybe she had secretly wished for a daughter.

โ€œAh! Johan, youโ€™re here?โ€

โ€œApologies. I shouldnโ€™t have left our guests unattended just to do my own thing.โ€

โ€œOh no, it was actually nice to see you working so hard! And it was clearly something important too.โ€

โ€œThank you for saying that.โ€

All I did was dig up the backyard flowerbed.

However, Ariel respected the meaning behind that action.

For my part, it was something I wouldโ€™ve had to bring up eventually, so I wanted to get it over with quickly.

If I kept putting it off, Iโ€™d just end up hesitating and dragging it out.

I should be the one to reap what Iโ€™ve sown.

โ€œBy the way, whereโ€™s Her Highness?โ€

I asked as I sat down in front of the table where lunch had been served. I had assumed weโ€™d all be eating together, so where had she gone?

Surely she wasnโ€™t still training?

โ€œOh, she was here earlier, butโ€ฆโ€

โ€œShe left with her silver mirror. Judging by the look on her face, Iโ€™d say it was something from the Imperial Palace.โ€

When Ariel trailed off, Yuna picked up the rest of the sentence. It wasnโ€™t exactly something youโ€™d want to say in front of others.

More than that, it was probably hard for Ariel to toss around the Imperial name so lightly.

Part of that mightโ€™ve been Yunaโ€™s free-spirited nature, but given that Ariel came from a Duchy, it was only natural that every word she said would be measured and deliberate.

โ€œI have a bad feeling about this.โ€

It had been the same in the game. Any quest related to the Imperial family always came with infuriating difficulty.

The rewards had been good, sureโ€ฆ

But now that this was no longer a game and very much real life, it was the kind of trouble best avoided at all costs.

As I ate with that uncomfortable feeling lingering in the back of my mindโ€”

โ€œIโ€™m back. Ah, no need to stand; stay seated. I donโ€™t want to be treated formally in a setting like this. And Johan? Youโ€™ve been working hard since this morning.โ€

โ€œYes, Your Highness.โ€

On the surface, she didnโ€™t seem any different from usual. That probably meant she was especially good at maintaining a poker face.

Or perhaps I just didnโ€™t know Lobelia well enough to tell the difference between her usual self and now.

Honestly, it was probably the latter.

If it were Ariel, I might have noticed. But Lobelia was someone whose face I barely even got to see most days.

โ€œMy brother contacted me. Just a light message asking how Iโ€™ve been.โ€

โ€œ…Which one?โ€

Ariel asked with a stiff expression, responding to Lobeliaโ€™s nonchalant shrug.

Depending on who it was from, the message could be taken very differently.

โ€œIt was from my second brother.โ€

The worst possible outcome.

Second Prince Loki Vicious von Miltonia.

He was the most vicious and cruel of all the imperial family.

There were even rumors that just mentioning his name in public would make people instinctively look over their shoulders.

And now he had personally contacted Lobelia?

There was no doubt he had something up his sleeve.

โ€œGiven the circumstances, Iโ€™ll need to head back to the capital a bit earlier than planned.โ€

Still, Lobelia probably understood that fact better than anyone.

I simply nodded without saying a word.

โ€œThatโ€™s a shame. I really liked it here. The air is clear, and the atmosphere is peaceful. But I canโ€™t very well turn this place into a sea of fire, can I?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆYour Highness, Iโ€™ll go with you.โ€

โ€œAriel. I donโ€™t want to interfere with my friendโ€™s private matters.โ€

โ€œBut stillโ€ฆ!โ€

Well, that was to be expected.

Honestly, Ariel felt more like Lobeliaโ€™s companion than mine.

It felt more natural for her to be Lobeliaโ€™s friend than to be my fiancรฉe.

Then again, we came from different worlds, so I suppose that perception made sense.

โ€œSon.โ€

โ€œYes?โ€

It happened just as I was quietly observing the situation without saying anything.

My mother who had been silently watching without getting involved suddenly called me.

โ€œDonโ€™t you think you should go too?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆHuh?โ€

โ€œI think that would be best. If you go with her, then Her Highness wonโ€™t have to turn down the young ladyโ€™s offer to accompany her, and the young lady wonโ€™t feel awkward or hesitant about it either.โ€

But if I go, Iโ€™ll die.

Sure, from an outside perspective, it would look better than sending oneโ€™s fiancรฉe off alone to the front lines.

But in reality, Iโ€™d only end up dragging everyone down.

And even if I did go, what could I possibly do? I wouldnโ€™t even make it past the Imperial Palace gates.

โ€œEven if youโ€™re not much help, just having you nearby will probably give the young lady some peace of mind.โ€

โ€œMother, Iโ€™m the one feeling uneasy here.โ€

โ€œThatโ€™s alright, dear.โ€

Iโ€™m the one whoโ€™s uneasy, so why is she the one saying itโ€™s alright?

โ€œMy son, youโ€™ll do just fine, wonโ€™t you?โ€

No, donโ€™t try to wrap this up like itโ€™s some touching story.

***

Weโ€™re going back.

As soon as tomorrow.

I canโ€™t believe I have to start packing again just one day after unpacking. I didnโ€™t even get a chance to rest. Iโ€™ve done nothing but work since I got here.

Itโ€™s unfair, sure, but I came because Ariel asked me to. So if Ariel says weโ€™re going back, then weโ€™re going back.

โ€œJohan, may I come in?โ€

โ€œAriel?โ€

While I was in the middle of packing againโ€”

Ariel knocked on the door.

Unlike someone who barges in and out of my room like it was her own, Ariel had manners.

โ€œYes, please come in.โ€

โ€œSo this is your room, Johanโ€ฆโ€

The moment she stepped in, Ariel glanced around the room.

We may be engaged, but she doesnโ€™t hold back.

โ€œAh, would it be alright if I sat down?โ€

โ€œOf course. Make yourself comfortable wherever youโ€™d like.โ€

โ€œThen, if youโ€™ll excuse me.โ€

Ariel sat on the edge of my bed and stayed quiet for a while.

She seemed to be hesitating about something. What was she trying to say?

โ€œJohan.โ€

โ€œYes?โ€

โ€œYou donโ€™t have to come back with me tomorrow. Youโ€™ve just gotten home. You should stay a little longer and rest.โ€

Iโ€™d been thinking the same thing all along, but actually hearing it made me uncomfortable.

I mean, seriouslyโ€ฆhow could I just say, “Alright, Iโ€™ll do that?”

I might be rude sometimes, but Iโ€™m not completely clueless.

โ€œItโ€™s fine. I didnโ€™t really have anything to do here anyway.โ€

โ€œBut stillโ€ฆโ€

โ€œReally, itโ€™s alright. Just because Iโ€™m returning with you doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™ll be interfering with Her Highnessโ€™s duties. Iโ€™ll just head back to the Cradle and take care of what I need to do.โ€

I mean it.

It was a little annoying to have to leave right after arriving, but honestly, life in the capital was more comfortable.

There were things I needed to take care of right away, too. As peaceful as it was here, there was just too much I left behind.

โ€œUnlessโ€ฆ is there something on your mind?โ€

โ€œI-Itโ€™s just thatโ€ฆโ€

Surprisingly, it seemed this was the right answer.

And I could more or less guess what had been weighing on her mind.

โ€œโ€ฆAbout Alice. I was wonderingโ€ฆ what happened to her afterward? Did she make it back safely? I hope nothing bad happened.โ€

Ariel didnโ€™t know the truth about Aliceโ€™s identity. The only ones who did were Lobelia who had thoroughly torn apart my background, and the sharp-witted Yuna.

Not that Ariel was slow or anything, butโ€ฆ there was bound to be a difference.

Still, was she really worried about Aliceโ€ฆ? I never wouldโ€™ve imagined sheโ€™d be thinking about the well-being of someone who didnโ€™t even exist anymore.

โ€œAriel, would you mind if I asked something?โ€

โ€œHmm? Oh, I donโ€™t mind. I came here to see you anyway.โ€

โ€œThen, would you follow me for a moment? Thereโ€™s something Iโ€™d like to show you.โ€

Instead of replying, Ariel simply nodded silently.

With that, I paused my packing and stepped outside.

***

We left the mansion and walked for a while. Once the houses in the area were no longer in sight, and we reached the foot of a small hill near the edge of the territoryโ€”

Ariel finally spoke again.

โ€œThis place isโ€ฆ?โ€

โ€œIt was my favorite spot. You can see the stars better here than anywhere else in the territory.โ€

โ€œIs that so?โ€

There were plenty of higher places, but none where the stars were as visible as they were here.

Other mountains had tall trees that blocked the view, so even reaching the summit didnโ€™t guarantee a clear look at the sky.

This spot, at least, opened up more the higher you went, so you could say the stars were relatively easy to see.

โ€œโ€ฆJust in case you misunderstand, let me clarifyโ€ฆ. Iโ€™m not planning anything weird, so donโ€™t worry.โ€

Not that I could even if I wanted to.

How exactly was I supposed to do anything to Ariel?

โ€œโ€ฆI donโ€™t mind, actually.โ€

Huh?

No, forget it. Probably just a slip of the tongue. No need to ask again and ruin the mood.

โ€œWell then. Just a moment. I need to prepare something from here on.โ€

โ€œAh, if itโ€™s alright, should we use my magic to go up?โ€

โ€œThat would be convenient, yes, but what I need to prepare is something else.โ€

Ariel was a good person.

Thatโ€™s why she worried about Alice, even though she couldโ€™ve dismissed her as nothing more than a character in a dream.

I couldโ€™ve kept it buried, but it felt ridiculous to keep hiding it from her when others already knew.

โ€œHooโ€ฆโ€

I created an illusion with magic.

A much more elaborate and convincing illusion than before took form.

โ€œAh.โ€

When the illusion took on human form, Ariel murmured.

โ€œAliceโ€ฆ?โ€

Thatโ€™s right. I had recreated Aliceโ€™s image through illusion.

More precisely, it was closer to using illusion magic to reproduce a memory from the past.

The Alice within the illusion, just like in the dream I had the night before, began running toward the hill with a bright smile on her face.

โ€œLetโ€™s follow her.โ€

โ€œAh, yes.โ€

Ariel and I followed the illusion. There was no fear of losing her.

After all, this was just an illusion I had created. No matter how slowly we walked, there was no way we could fall behind a moment that belonged to the past.

And so, we followed Aliceโ€™s illusion to the top of the hill.

There, we foundโ€ฆ

โ€œAhโ€ฆ!โ€

Aliceโ€™s grave.

I had made her grave at the place she loved most.

Her body had already vanished by then, so perhaps it was meaningless.

โ€œI spent a long time wondering whether or not I should tell you this, but Iโ€™ve decided to say it.โ€

In the end, this was the past.

It wasnโ€™t something Ariel needed to know.

Noโ€”in fact, as my fiancรฉe, there was nothing good for her in knowing it.

The past should remain in the past.

โ€œAlice was the daughter of a baronโ€™s family that had served our house for generations. But the baron passed away before her, leaving Alice behind. So, we decided to honor the baron with the utmost respect.โ€

โ€œThenโ€ฆ could it beโ€ฆโ€

Ariel flinched.

She had likely pieced it all together by now.

โ€œAlice was my fiancรฉe.โ€

Ariel gently wrapped her arms around her shoulders. Just like me, she must have been feeling all sorts of emotions.

โ€œAs children, we didnโ€™t really understand love or anything like that. We were just like family.โ€

Thatโ€™s why, even now, I could only say I wasnโ€™t sure if I had truly loved her.

Before I could even figure it out, I lost Alice. All that remained was longing, and there was no way to ever be certain.

As for whether Alice had loved meโ€ฆ to be honest, I couldnโ€™t say for sure.

But still, she must have at least tried to love me. I could feel that through what had happened this time.

โ€œThis was Aliceโ€™s favorite place. The stars were always visible here, just like now. Thatโ€™s why I naturally grew fond of it too.โ€

Like I said earlier, this used to be my favorite place.

But after losing Alice here that day, Iโ€™d never allowed myself to think that way again.

โ€œAriel, Alice is here. Andโ€ฆโ€

I placed the pot of rosemary I had brought in advance beside Aliceโ€™s grave.

โ€œI plan to leave the past buried here now.โ€

There had been a promise between Alice and me.

We had said that one day, Iโ€™d tell her what color the rosemary flowers had bloomed.

But after Aliceโ€™s death, though I continued to tend the flower bed, I never came back to this place.

I had only been turning my back on her death and clinging to moments of the past.

And today, I finally brought the rosemary flowers to Alice.

That made one thing, at leastโ€”

One promise, I was finally able to fulfill.

โ€œIโ€™m sorry, Ariel. Hearing about a former fiancรฉe couldnโ€™t have been pleasant.โ€

โ€œJohan.โ€

Ariel simply asked,

โ€œThen why did you tell me all of this?โ€

โ€œโ€ฆI wanted you to know.โ€

This had been my burden, something I had carried alone.

Yes, all I had done was confess a selfishness I shouldโ€™ve kept to myself.

Maybe I just wanted to feel a little lighter because of it.

โ€œIs that so?โ€

Then Ariel smiled.

โ€œIn that case, Iโ€™m glad. Please tell me more about you, Johan.โ€

Then, she reached out her hand.

I took it.

The strange sense of distance that had once lingered between us had long since vanished.

As we descended the mountain, gazing up at the stars, the distance between us had closed to the point that our shoulders were almost touching.

Yuna is annoying. yes she saved Johan multiple times, but if a person breaks your privacy so much and always interferes with your relationship with others whilst spreading misunderstanding knowingly, you will surely get pissed of

I mean true but they are all kinda annoying, the princess actively pulls him into situations that threaten his life despite knowing that his very weak and could actually die if anything goes wrong, she also constantly abuses her status as princess to intentionally make him uncomfortable.
Ariel is in some ways even worse, she literally forced an engagement on him based on delusion, one that could potentially get him killed just for existing, she also uses him as an emotional crutch and sandbag without properly considering his entire feelings, and realistically she only gets away with it due to her situations resemblance to his ex-fiance.
At least Yuna in all her annoying glory actually sees the guy and knows him more than pretty much every other character, she is also the only character that feels like an actual friend among the cast despite her chaotic nature, she is the closest thing to an actual partner we have in this story.
Point I am trying to make is that they all have negatives Yuna included, and you could pretty much an argument for both Yuna and Ariel. Princess is kinda irredeemable to me tho.
