Chapter 65: Electrocution

Released:

Aren’t there just days like that?

Days when nothing goes right no matter what you do.

Seriously… even the smallest things just don’t go your way.

Yeah…

“……”

Today was exactly one of those days for me.

“There are CCTV cameras all over Korea….did you seriously think you could escape?”

…I usually avoid CCTV just fine. Why not today, of all days…?

For a moment, I even wondered if the gem was actually cursed or something.

Let’s stop blaming the gem.

I realized that blaming others wouldn’t fix anything, so I quickly texted Seo-yoon to ask for help escaping from the police station.

“Oh my, do you know how hard it was for us to find you?”

“……”

After I knocked out the taxi driver and fled the scene…

“Are you hurt anywhere?”

“…? …Not really.”

“Whew… it’s such a relief that you weren’t injured in that situation.”

“…Huh?”

I was greeted by incredibly kind police officers.

“This is just a routine investigation, so there’s no need to be overly nervous.”

“…What do you mean by that?”

“Well, when there’s an accident, it’s standard procedure for the police to conduct an investigation. We’ll just check what happened and that’ll be it.”

“…Just to be clear, you do know I knocked out the taxi driver and ran away, right?”

“Oh come on! It’s not like you just knocked him out and ran. You saved his life first, then knocked him out.”

Unbelievable.

So now we live in a world where saving someone’s life gives you the right to knock them unconscious?

I thought self-defense law was broken in Korea, but apparently, it still holds up in weird situations like this?

“The taxi driver also knows that it wasn’t intentional. You just misjudged your strength and knocked him out by accident, then ran off in a panic.”

“????”

Knows? What the hell does he know? He looked like he had no idea what was going on.

“He even said he wouldn’t press charges, so we have no intention of punishing you or anything like that.”

…Am I supposed to be thankful for this or not?

At this point, I clearly wasn’t the Villain Hunter.

Because when I was the Villain Hunter, no matter what bad thing I did—

– That’s just like the Villain Hunter! Justice has been served!

– The Villain Hunter is a dark hero!

– Even in his evil, there lies justice!

—I’d get flooded with delusional fan comments like that, which honestly made it kind of awkward to keep up the villain act…

“So, just to confirm, in that emergency situation, you reached out to protect the taxi driver’s body so he wouldn’t get hurt, right?”

“…I did it to knock him out.”

“Hahaha, no need to be so modest. What kind of criminal knocks someone out on purpose, then flees the scene without even taking their money?”

“Uh… well…”

Even though I wasn’t the Villain Hunter right now, I couldn’t help but be baffled at how people insisted on interpreting my criminal actions as something noble.

…Should I have stolen the money after all?

Leaving that useless thought aside for now, I was focused on figuring out how to get out of this police station when—

“Oh, I forgot to ask the most basic question.”

“……”

“What’s your name, sir?”

“……”

“We’re not trying to get any weird info or anything. If you just hand over your ID, we’ll make a copy and give it right back.”

“……”

“Haha, you’re really shy, aren’t you? My son’s the same. He hates talking to people—”

Bzzzzzt—

“?”

“Huh? What the—who turned off the lights?”

Suddenly, the light in the interrogation room I was in went out with a spark.

“Looks like a blackout. That’s never happened before. Just a moment.”

A blackout, huh? What perfect timing.

Is my luck finally kicking in?

Better late than never. This had to be some kind of miraculous phenomenon. Like fate itself was telling me to escape the police station.

As soon as the officer stepped out of the room, I immediately moved to follow—

Fzzzzzt—thud—

All of a sudden, the officer who’d been standing right in front of me collapsed on the spot, trembling as he clutched at the wall.

It was as if…

…He got electrocuted?

He wouldn’t stop shaking like someone who had just been shocked.

Also—

The static electricity is intense.

I could feel a faint but powerful magnetic force coming from the wall of the building right next to me…

It was clear that electricity was running through the police station itself.

A villain’s behind this.

Not every part of the station would be conducting electricity, of course, but plenty of electrically conductive materials had been placed throughout the building.

Thud—

I gave the officer who was slumped over with his hand on the metal doorframe a rough nudge with my foot.

Stop shaking already. You’re kind of stealing the scene.

Once I made the guy stop trembling, I cautiously peeked my head out to see what was happening outside the station.

No one’s around.

Not that I had any particular desire to save the people here anyway.

Tatata—

I took advantage of the situation to escape the station.

Bursting through the door at full speed, I rounded the corner and made a dash for the front entrance—

“!”

The moment I turned the corner, I ran straight into a man standing right in front of me.

Normally, if I bumped into someone like that, I could’ve just twisted my body and slipped past him….but of all people, this guy had to be an ability user who could manipulate electricity.

“Ggkkkgggggh—!”

The instant we collided, I felt a current surge through my entire body… my muscles started trembling uncontrollably.

And then—

“Holy—Aaaaarh!”

As my body shook without my control, a sphere of flame suddenly formed around my arm.

And thanks to that, the villain I’d bumped into caught fire.

“F-Fire..! I’m on fire..!”

The guy threw himself to the ground and started frantically rolling around on the police station floor in an attempt to put it out.

Thanks to that—

Haa…

My body, which had been convulsing from the shock, finally stopped and collapsed to the floor.

Man, I really got lucky. I even figured out how to use the fire ability…

Thanks to my regeneration ability, my stiffened muscles quickly loosened up.

Fwoosh—

Still lying on the ground, I flicked my right hand a few times to summon another fireball, testing out the fire ability I just discovered.

Whoosh—

Then I tossed it at the man who was still rolling around right beside me.

“Gaaaah!”

The poor guy had no idea I was adding more flames while he was busy trying to put them out.

Whoosh—Whoosh—Whoosh—

“Why—! Why won’t the fire go out?! What the fuuuuuck!”

…Idiot.

At this point, I was starting to wonder how long it would take for him to catch on, so I just kept throwing more fire.

“Wow…”

I looked down at the body that got roasted to a golden crisp.

“Woooow…”

The crazy part was, even at the end, the guy kept rolling around until he slammed his own head into a sharp corner of the floor and died just like that.

“Wooooow…”

If I ever ended up back on trial, and killing that guy somehow got added to my sentence, I’d feel seriously wronged.

“…Idiot.”

That was the only word that came to mind. I muttered it under my breath. It was my only parting thought about him.

“Ugh… ngh…”

“Sir… Officer …”

I could hear some of the fallen officers beginning to come to.

But whether the cops lived or died wasn’t really my concern, so I turned to leave the station—

“Whoa! What the hell?!”

Beep—

Srrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr—

“What are you doing, seriously?”

I mean, who wouldn’t freak out at the sight of someone who looked exactly like me floating faintly in the air right behind me?

It was Pyro Bomber disguised as me. The surprise made me instinctively go into a defensive stance. And in the process, I accidentally slammed the emergency alarm behind me.

“…Next time, how about using a blinker before sneaking up on me?”

“Do we really need to announce to the whole damn city that we’re here?”

“Anyway, let’s just get out of here.”

Before the firefighters arrived at the scene, we took off running straight out of the police station.

[Dopamine is off the charts today lololol]

About three hours ago, the guy who saved the taxi driver’s life and knocked him out got caught at the police station.

But apparently, the police didn’t capture the ability user to arrest him. They just needed to bring him in for a formal investigation.

While they were halfheartedly going through the motions, suddenly a villain who could control electricity attacked the station, and most of the officers ended up getting electrocuted.

The CCTV glitched during the incident, so the footage cuts in and out.
