Volume 7: A Maid’s Crime Chapter 10

Three days after Jane had been killed, Inspector Jaguar came to visit me at Albion Prison.

“It’s been a while, hasn’t it? I have a few things I’d like to confirm, if you don’t mind the time.”

“Of course not. I also have something I’d like to ask you, Inspector.”

On that night, the reason behind Jane’s murder was revealed through the interrogation of the trio who broke into Lewis’s house.

Apart from the 20,000 gil, Jane had stolen a ring from Mrs. Essel.

It’s unclear what her intentions were when she stole that ring.

However, that ring led to the tragedy.

The trio had been hired to retrieve the ring.

We didn’t know the identity of the client, but we had testimonies describing him as a well-dressed gentleman.

“It’s likely to be someone associated with Baron Rossell. I investigated, and it turns out the owner of that ring is Henry, the eldest son of Baron Rossell.”

The problem was how Mrs. Essel came to possess Henry’s ring.

“Was it an affair?” I asked.

“Yes. They apparently met at a party organized by an industry group. It was Henry who made advances,” Inspector Jaguar explained.

So, he must have entrusted his own ring to Mrs. Essel as a symbol of their love.

“However, Henry was already engaged to Marquis Embra’s daughter.”

“That engagement was called off. Baron Foster apparently denounced Lord Rossell in parliament. It seems quite intense—the eldest son having an affair with a married woman, and all the suspicious murders that followed.”

“I see,”

“By the way, Baron Foster is your uncle, isn’t he?”

“Well, technically,”

I was the one who gave the evidence to my cousin and uncle, Baron Foster.

“By the way, Inspector, why did you entrust me with the evidence ring?”

“Hmm? Well, you seemed to have a plan, and we couldn’t lay hands on nobles in the police force, so I just left it to you,” Inspector Jaguar replied.

Although I had managed a small act of revenge by using Baron Foster, it wouldn’t lead to the punishment of Henry, the mastermind behind Jane’s murder. At best, it would spread dishonorable rumors and ruin a promising marriage. Henry would probably continue to live unscathed.

It was indeed petty revenge, offering no real satisfaction.

“Mr. Wolf, please be careful not to get carried away by strange thoughts.”

Inspector Jaguar peered into my face with a worried look on his face.

“I’m not thinking of attacking him or anything of the sort.”

However, there was a slightly meddlesome fairy diligently gathering evidence of the Rossell family’s corruption.

Body-strengthening magic was effective even for fairies, aiding them in high-speed flights and power-ups.

I crafted magic scrolls using fabric, and Kimberly used them as capes, making them easy to carry around.

“Fuhahaha, I feel like the Fairy King!” Kimberly exclaimed.

Though I felt somewhat uneasy about her getting carried away…

Since the Rosell family was dipping into the funds meant for northern development, it wouldn’t be long before their crimes were exposed.

If we leaked information to their rivals, they might accuse them of embezzlement or even frame them for treason against the state.

But even if they faced the gallows, Jane wouldn’t come back to life.
