Chapter 37: My Archenemy Has Appeared!

Published on

[Simon and Miss Susanna have a delightful conversation. They talk about mechanical engineering, and Susanna thinks he should pursue further studies at a university instead of wasting his time working as a servant]

Trying to poach my servant again? You really are my class enemy! Elisa glared in the direction of her male servant.

Where’s Eleanor? Why hasn’t she gone over there yet?!

[Eleanor arrives in the garden and joins their conversation]

She actually came?

Elisa marveled. As long as something was mentioned in the [Log], as long as Simon thought of it, it seemed certain to happen.

What terrifying powers of observation.

[Simon tells a supernatural tale involving voodoo and possession by the dead. Eleanor becomes engrossed in the story without realizing its underlying meaning]

[Simon brings up a half-true, half-fictional case involving symbol worship and a failed attempt at summoning spirits. Eleanor’s heart races, and she finds it incredibly thrilling]

[Finally, Simon mentions that Miss Susanna has been having trouble sleeping and suffering from recurring nightmares. Eleanor is still pondering the previous two stories]

[Simon thinks Eleanor is a curly-haired baboon]

So you think so too!

We’re kindred spirits!

Elisa was delighted, suddenly feeling much closer to Eleanor.

[Simon tells an extremely terrifying story about a horrifying monster hiding inside a sofa. Every time its owner sits down, they’re actually sitting in its embrace]

[Eleanor felt a shiver run across her scalp. She activates [Spirit Vision] and checks the bench beneath her but finds no monster and breathes a sigh of relief]

[Simon speaks up at just the right moment. Eleanor looks toward him, and as her gaze passes over Susanna, she sees the evil spirit]

[Eleanor staggers and nearly falls off the bench, barely managing to suppress a scream]

Elisa held back her laughter. She could imagine just how terrified and embarrassed Eleanor must be right now.

Anyone would be startled if they suddenly saw an evil spirit without warning, especially after hearing three terrifying stories.

This male servant really has a wicked sense of humor. He could’ve told a less frightening story, but he deliberately chose an extremely terrifying one. Then he even used his voice to lure Miss Eleanor into looking. That kind of trick was almost impossible to guard against!

Come to think of it, Eleanor could use [Spirit Vision], so she really was a transcendent. Elisa just didn’t know what rank she was.

Elisa made a mental note of this information.

[Eleanor pretends her legs have gone numb from sitting too long and uses that to explain her lapse in manners. She carefully observes the evil spirit behind Susanna and realizes that it is merely a mindless, lowest-level evil spirit, allowing her to relax]

“Have you come into contact with anything recently?” Eleanor asked Susanna as she pounded her weakened thighs.

“What kind of thing do you mean?” Susanna asked in confusion.

“Something strange or frightening, something that might be causing your nightmares,” Eleanor replied. “I know a little about psychology. Perhaps I can help you.”

Evil spirits didn’t attach themselves to people for no reason. Susanna must have come into contact with a corpse or some ancient object.

As the fear in her heart gradually faded, Eleanor began to grow excited.

The great Transcendent Lady Eleanor had finally encountered her first transcendent incident!

I’ll save the innocent Miss Susanna, uncover the truth behind this entire incident, and protect this beautiful world from the clutches of evil spirits!

Lady Eleanor the Savior, always ready for action!

Seeing the excitement in Eleanor’s eyes, Susanna hesitated for a moment before answering, “If we’re talking about something frightening, then it would have to be what happened in the East District.”

With Eleanor’s permission, Susanna began talking about a subject that normally had no place at a picnic.

Susanna had long been involved with the [East District Poor Relief Association]. Every week, she would accompany the association to the East District to take part in charitable activities, such as distributing meals and helping the poor repair various items.

She had also sponsored five children so they could attend night school.

Last week, she had gone to the East District with the group and decided to check on the children she was sponsoring while she was there, only to receive terrible news.

One of the children had been attacked on his way home from night school. His chest had been pierced through, leaving a hole the size of a fist. He had collapsed in an alley and wasn’t discovered until the following morning.

Susanna had attended the boy’s funeral. If there was anything frightening that had happened recently, that was the only thing she could think of.

“Who did it? How could someone be so cruel!” Miss Eleanor’s sense of justice flared, and she wanted nothing more than to tear the murderer limb from limb.

Simon sighed inwardly.

Among the trio of Elisa, Mabel, and Eleanor, Miss Eleanor was the proudest and the one whose intelligence came closest to that of a curly-haired baboon.

Contrary to what her reckless personality might suggest, Miss Mabel was actually the most perceptive of the three.

Although Miss Mabel rarely bothered to use her clever brain, her subconscious instincts and intuition alone were enough to completely outclass Eleanor and put her on par with Elisa.

Eleanor thought of Mabel as her curly-haired baboon pet, but in reality, it was often the other way around. Poor Eleanor was constantly being wrapped around Miss Mabel’s finger without Mabel even realizing it.

If Mabel were here, she would definitely have realized that there was something strange about this attack.

The human body wasn’t fragile. Even a wild beast couldn’t casually punch straight through a person and leave behind a hole the size of a fist.

Yet Miss Eleanor hadn’t noticed anything strange at all and was still asking who had done it.

At this rate, Eleanor would assume it was an ordinary murder. After exorcising the evil spirit, the most she would do was pressure the police into solving the case quickly. Heh, and the police would just find some random scapegoat to take the blame.

There was no helping it. Simon could only serve as her external brain and point out what was wrong.

“A hole the size of a fist?” He looked at Susanna, feigning surprise.

“Yes.” Susanna nodded. “The officers thought it might have been done with a piece of scrap steel…”

She lowered her head, her expression sorrowful.

“That would still require tremendous strength. I don’t think just anyone could do something like that. Someone that strong should be pretty easy to find.” Simon was only one step away from outright saying that a human hadn’t done it.

Eleanor finally caught on. She thought to herself:

No, it doesn’t necessarily have to be someone incredibly strong. Most likely, this wasn’t done by a human at all!

Having uncovered the hidden truth, Miss Eleanor felt a little proud of herself and glanced at the male servant and Susanna. Miss Susanna clearly hadn’t thought deeply about the attack and only knew the surface details. The male servant was quite perceptive. His observation was what tipped me off. He just lacks a bit of knowledge and hasn’t realized that transcendents could be involved.

Just now, I was wondering whether the child had turned into an evil spirit because of his gruesome death. But thinking about it carefully, even someone who dies horribly rarely becomes an evil spirit. Otherwise, those factories would have become supernatural hotspots long ago.

The attacker is the suspicious one! The attacker must be a transcendent connected to [Death] or the [Spirit World], and that’s why the dead child became an evil spirit!

An evil spirit will first attach itself to whoever is closest to it and whoever it misses the most. Susanna was that child’s benefactor and even attended his funeral, so the evil spirit attached itself to her!

The evil spirit isn’t the real issue. That vile attacker is!

Miss Eleanor’s blood boiled with excitement. Compared to fighting an evil spirit, fighting an evil transcendent was far more impressive and much more befitting a true powerhouse.

Has this young lady’s first archenemy finally appeared?

Just you wait! Lady Eleanor will definitely bring you to justice. I’ll use your blood to console the soul of that child who died such a horrible death!

I’m fired up!

Eleanor covered her cheek with her right hand, hiding her excited grin.

After getting her expression under control, she lowered her hand and looked at Susanna.

First, I’ll exorcise the evil spirit, then ask for more information. Hehe, as expected of my archenemy. Instead of showing yourself outright like some character in a third-rate crime novel, you’re making me go through the investigation first.

I’m looking forward to facing you more and more!

“Miss Eleanor?” Susanna looked at her in confusion.

Miss Eleanor had been standing there by herself for three whole minutes without saying a word, yet her expression had gone through all sorts of changes.

Eleanor turned around and grabbed Susanna’s hand. “Come with me to the bedroom. There’s something I want to show you.”

Susanna had no idea what was going on and cast Simon a pleading look.

Unfortunately for her, this was exactly what Simon had been aiming for. He watched as the two young ladies walked away.
